A slideshow of Lionel Messi celebrating Argentina's World Cup victory is the most liked Instagram picture of all time.

Within hours of uploading it, the player received over 65 million likes, and the figure is still rising.

Argentina won the World Cup on penalties against France on Sunday in Qatar, becoming the first team to do it in 36 years.

Messi's Instagram post received millions more likes than the previous record-holder, a plain picture of an egg, which allowed it to surpass it.

What was that you said about an egg?

Yes, in the past, an egg was the most popular item.

People were encouraged to interact with the image when it first surfaced in an effort to dethrone Kylie Jenner as the current record holder, giving the impression that it was a protest vote against celebrities.

The well-known cosmetics artist previously held the record with her image from 2018 announcing the birth of her daughter Stormi, which has since racked up 18 million likes.

Messi also achieved this record, but Jenner was the first female to do it on the social media platform and has 300 million followers.

How, then, does that explain the egg?

Numerous rumours surfaced over the proprietor of the @world record egg Instagram account and how it so fast racked up so many likes.

However, British advertising executive Chris Godfrey later revealed he and two colleagues had built it intentionally to obtain the most likes. Initially, some people thought it was a marketing gimmick from a huge firm that had acquired followers.

The egg did beat Kendall Jenner's previous record, which has been broken 57 million times and counting, but Lionel Messi, a rival who also holds a lot of world records, ultimately broke it.

Guinness World Records published a list of the records the winner broke after the World Cup final, stating that Messi had.

    • 19 times as captain during the World Cup.
    • A male player has participated in World Cup competition five times.
    • The first individual to contribute to a goal in five different World Cups.

Messi now has a new record to add to his collection after the success of his most recent Instagram slideshow.
